Farmers are no strangers to protecting their homes from bushfires and have welcomed a new trial that will abolish expensive registration fees for private firefighting vehicles. According to Deborah Charlton, a farmer based near Wagga Wagga and the chair of the NSW Farmers Rural Affairs Committee, farmers were traditionally the first on the scene when a fire ignited in remote country. Just late last year, a series of storms caused trees to catch alight in her area and she, along with her neighbours, were fortunate enough to have their vehicles fitted with firefighting equipment to put out the fires. "Farmers are the first responders; they can get into certain smaller areas, and they get there quickly," she said.
